There are only 25 women in each WSOP event
Women aren’t playing poker
Despite the fact that there are some very powerful women in the world of poker they are not well represented at the WSOP and haven’t won an event for years
The list of high profile female poker players is seemingly endless as names like Annie Duke, and Vanessa Rouso are always on the airwaves with news of their many tournament wins repeated time and again. In what was once regarded as the preserve of men only women have stepped up to the plate and secured the respect of all poker fans regardless of sex for their ability. The premier event on the international poker circuit is the World Series of Poker (WSOP) with more than 50 tournaments being held every year, yet there are only an average of 25 women at each WSOP event. This number has surprised many poker pros and pundits who had always felt the influence of women in the game who have had an impact out of proportion to their numbers.
Not only is the average number of female participants at WSOP events much lower than one might have thought but there are a correspondingly low number of female event winners, it has in fact been a massive 200 events since a woman has won a winner’s bracelet. Despite the many high profile female poker players, according to the facts they just haven’t managed to be the last person standing at the WSOP for some time.
Maybe it is for that reason that the women who do buy into the events at the WSOP are all the more determined to win and prove to their fellow poker players that they are every bit as good as them. One spectacular WSOP event winner is Jennifer Harmen who has won two WSOP bracelets. In 2002 she won the $5,000 buy in, No Limit Hold ‘em event for a massive prize of $212,000. She is one of the legends of poker and is regularly seen on televised events in the USA such as Poker After Dark. She is a part of the legendary poker circle who play very high stakes cash games in the biggest hotels in Las Vegas. She plays against the very biggest names in the game such as Daniel Negreanu and Phil Helmuth. There are many successful women in poker and hopefully the 2012 WSOP series will bring forth another female winner or two to break the cold spell that they have had when it comes to winning bracelets.
